ABOUT THE THEME: Despite well-publicized declines in religious affiliation in the U.S., religion remains an important source of community, meaning, and identity for a large portion of humanity. Religion scholars have often treated religious identity as having a direct influence on people’s lives, ignoring how religion intersects with things like race, gender, class, and sexuality in shaping people’s opportunities and orientations. In a similar vein, sociologists often ignore religion, despite its deep entanglements with other aspects of people’s social lives and experiences. To understand religion in today’s world and to cultivate deeper integration with other sociological subfields, sociologists of religion must continue developing innovative approaches to studying religion that emphasize its intersections with other social institutions and with other elements of identity and status.

The 2024 annual meeting welcomes discussion and exploration of all research relevant to the sociological study of religion today and especially solicits theoretically and methodologically rigorous scholarship pursuing themes of religion and intersectionality.

Papers and sessions may also focus on any other topic in the sociology of religion. We especially encourage papers and sessions that pursue and stimulate new avenues of Research and highlight innovative theoretical and methodological approaches. We welcome specialty sessions, including book events, workshops on teaching and professional development, and discussions that focus on a particular question or topic.

OTHER EVENTS:

  • The annual Furfey Lecture will be delivered by Professor Geneviève Zubrzycki. (Read more about the Furfey lectures HERE.)
  • We will have two receptions:
    —– August 9: Welcome reception from 8-10 pm on the Terrace. (Registration from 7-9 pm.)
    —– August 11:  Closing reception (with ASA Religion Section) from 8:00-9:30 pm on the Terrace,
  • We will also host a book exhibit where publishers and ASR members can display their recent work.

This year’s conference will feature three mini-symposia, each of which has its own deadline for paper submissions.  They are:

  1. Title: What Can the Sociology of Religion Learn from the Global South?
    The perception of religion as a phenomenon separate from other social structures is not a suitable reflection of the embedded nature of religion as embodied, experienced, and expressed in Global South contexts and societies.  This mini-symposium addresses the implications of this for the main conference theme, Religion and Intersectionality. 
  2. Title: Interdisciplinary Scholars of Race and Religion
    Although knowledge creation in the area of race and religion is robust, it has been hampered by disciplinary silos. This mini-symposium seeks to bridge those silos by bringing together scholars of sociology, religious studies, anthropology, psychology, and other disciplines to share their perspectives. 

  3. Title: “Religion and the COVID-19 Pandemic?”
    We welcome presentations based on qualitative or quantitative research, or on media analysis, that address issues of religion’s response to, role in managing or not managing, etc., the COVID-19 pandemic?  (Suggested issues are listed HERE.) 

GENERAL CONFERENCE DEADLINES:

  • Gallagher Travel Grant applications: March 15, 2024 
  • Session proposals:  April 5, 2024 
  • Paper abstract submissions: May 14, 2024 (deadline extended)
  • All submissions should be made through the member portal at the ASR website at www.sociologyofreligion.org beginning in mid-January 2024.

ASR Membership is required to organize a session, present a paper, serve as a panelist, or hold another role in the program. Participants are expected to register for the meeting by July 1, 2024.
