In many ways, the Association for the Sociology of Religion has enjoyed much success over the past year and is in excellent shape as we enter 2019. The planning for our 2019 meeting in New York – “Engaging Religion in a Contested Age”- is well underway, and we continue moving forward with Oxford University Press as the publisher of our journal and Gerardo Marti as its editor.
ANNUAL MEETING
The 2018 is being organized by our Program Committee, ASR 2019 President, Paula D. Nesbitt, our Program Chair, and me as your Executive Officer. Our hotel will be the Park Central Hotel New York, located at 870 Seventh Ave., just steps away from the ASA hotel. The area is surrounded by local eateries and cafes and is a few blocks away from Times Square and several theaters. If you like musicals, plays, comedy, etc., be sure to check out a show. Get your tickets early for high demand performances!
We will continue our two-day meeting pattern, with the ASA Religion Section meeting the day prior to our first conference day. Our opening night reception will be on Sunday, August 11. NEW THIS YEAR: Our opening night reception will be a joint reception with the ASA Religion Section. Our sessions will be on Monday and Tuesday, August 12 and 13. There will be approximately five to seven simultaneous session each day, followed by the Presidential and Furfey Lectures and receptions. Please be attentive to both the submission deadline dates and ensuring that your 2019 ASR membership is current. The submission of complete session proposals will occur between January 1 and March 31, 2019. Please visit the ASR website at www.sociologyofreligion.com for submission guidelines and for access to the online submission portal. Both session and paper proposals will be submitted directly through the portal on the website. Individual paper presentation proposals will be accepted through April 30, 2019. Because 2019 membership in ASR is required for program consideration (one author for multi-authored papers), if you haven’t joined or renewed your membership in the ASR, please do so on the ASR website before attempting to submit a proposal. Please DO NOT submit a proposal if you cannot arrange to be available during any of the conference days and time slots that the Program Chair may assign your presentation. One request for a change can result in up to eight additional changes. As you can imagine, this can be a headache and next to impossible to accommodate. The Program Committee thanks you in advance for your understanding.
Anyone who will be on the conference program (presenting research, panelist, discussant, etc.) must be a current ASR member and register for the conference. Session organizers should make these requirements clear to anyone they invite to participate in a session or serve on a panel. Please contact the 2019 Program Committee with any questions regarding the membership requirement, especially if you want to organize an author-meets-critic session.
