Paul Hanly Furfey Lecture
The Paul Hanly Furfey Lecture is given annually in honor of Monsignor Paul Hanly Furfey (1896-1992), who served as ASR’s seventh president in 1944. Father Furfey was a priest and professor of sociology at The Catholic University of America, where he became known for his broad intellectual interests, his passion for civil rights and social justice, and his insistence on the use of rigorous social scientific methods. The earliest lectures in honor of Father Furfey were delivered at The Catholic University of America by Robert Bellah (1974), Benton Johnson (1975), Gordon Zahn (1976), Talcott Parsons (1977), Robert Drinan (1978), Suzanne Keller (1979), and David Moberg (1980). The Furfey lecture was entrusted to ASR in 1981 “to continue Furfey’s tradition of excellence.” It is a high point of the meeting and is published in Sociology of Religion. Recent lecturers include Immanuel Wallerstein, Robert Wuthnow, Ann Swidler, Jose Casanova, Nancy Ammerman, and François Gauthier. The current ASR President decides on a Furfey Lecturer.
