The Department of Religious Studies invites applications for a 9-month Visiting Instructor I position beginning Fall 2015 with the possible extension for up to three years. We are seeking a candidate who is an outstanding teacher with a deep interest in pedagogy as well as theoretical and methodological issues in the study of religion. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in religious studies or in one of the disciplines that contribute to the interdisciplinary field of religious studies. Applicants are expected to have successfully defended the dissertation for the doctoral degree by July, 2015–with the degree officially conferred by the end of August, 2015. The department has particular interest in candidates with a specialization in: Islam and the modern world; Christian, Islamic, or Jewish mysticism; World Christianity; Religion and Gender; or, Religion and Literature/Film. The department also seeks candidates who can extend our global reach and would welcome applications from scholars focusing on religion in: Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The candidate for the position will teach World Religions and Introduction to Religious Studies but will also have the opportunity to teach in his or her area of specialization. The teaching load is 4-4, with an opportunity to teach a summer course depending on the summer teaching budget. The 9-month salary is $41,400.
