ASR News and Announcements December 2016

2016-12-21T22:06:57-05:00

Rachel Kraus, Executive Officer

In many ways, the Association for the Sociology of Religion is in excellent shape as we enter 2017.  Our 78th annual meeting in Seattle this year was a great success.  Highlights of this year’s meeting included Lori Beaman’s Presidential Address, “Living Well Together in a (non)Religion Future:  Contributions from the Sociology of Religion” and Linda Woodhead’s Furfey Lecture “Is No Religion the New Religion?”  We offered more sessions than even before, including four ASR/ASA Joint Sessions and fourteen author-meets-critic sessions.  Participation in the annual meeting was at an all-time high with around 250 registrants.  Further details about these and other aspects of the annual meeting are available on the ASR website at www.sociologyofreligion.com.

Wanted: Book Chapter Proposals For? Orange Is the new Black and the World of Sociology.
Editors: Rasha Aly, University of Cincinnati, and Christian Messer Gaitskill, MSW, LSW
Possible Publisher: Palgrave MacMillan
Orange Is the New Black is a popular, Netflix show that expands upon Piper Kerman’s memoir, “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison.” Kerman spent 13 months in prison for her small-part involvement in a drug ring. The drama follows Piper Chapman (the fictional character based on Kerman), and other inmates at the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary. Beyond having the plots just tell stories, many of the storylines have numerous sociological connections. Different parts of the show can be connected to many sociological topics such as the Black Lives […]

Seattle University’s new Center for Religious Wisdom & World Affairs is seeking to bring together theologians and scholars of religion from a variety of faith traditions and disciplines to explore the ways in which religious wisdom and the resources of faith communities can lend assistance in the analysis, diagnosis and community responses needed to address the problem of homelessness.
A unique opportunity to participate in the interreligious analysis of a pressing social issue
Scholars will meet at Seattle University on April 25 and 26, 2017. During the course of the two days, they will learn about the issue of homelessness from legal experts, policy analysts, and economists; participate in a discussion with local stakeholders, including religious leaders; and prepare paper proposal abstracts […]

Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. The candidate’s research and teaching interests should center upon religious traditions as located and developed in the Americas. The candidate […]
