The Davidson College Department of Sociology invites applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professorship beginning July 1, 2019.  Successful candidates will teach 5 courses annually to fulfill needs in the Department: three different courses in areas of sociological expertise, and two different courses in theory, methods or statistics. Favorable consideration will be given to the candidate’s willingness to participate in departmental initiatives that support Sociology and to contribute to the College’s curriculum offering cross-listed courses in Africana Studies and Gender and Sexuality Studies and/or substantive courses that satisfy the Justice, Equality and Community requirement.

Thank you to everyone who attended our 80th annual meeting in Philadelphia and helped make it a great success.  I hope you all found intellectually engaging conversations, met some new people, and enjoyed Philadelphia sites.  Highlights of this year’s meeting included Daniel V.A. Olson’s Presidential Address, Jennifer Glass’s Furfey Lecture on religion and politics, seven Author Meets Critics sessions, and four Presidential Sessions.  The annual meeting also featured two professionalization workshops focusing on teaching sociology of religion, and Louisville Institute research funding opportunities for social scientific studies of religion.  Along with our McNamara and Distinguished Article Awards, we also presented our second Lifetime Achievement Award.  Congratulations to our award winners:  Helana Darwin (McNamara Award), […]

The Society for the Scientific Study of Religion is currently accepting individual paper, topical session, and author-meets-critics proposals for our 2018 annual meeting, which will take place October 26-28 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The theme of the meeting is “Religion and Power: The Creation, Reproduction and Deconstruction of Social Orders.”  The deadline to submit abstracts is March 31, 2018, and decision notifications will be made by April 30, 2018.

A Religious Study Tour of China will be run this summer by the US-China Catholic Association (USCCA). The USCCA has run study tours of China for the past thirty years, mainly for building relations between the Church community in the United States and China.

Especially in light of a potential breakthrough in relations between the Vatican and Beijing, there might be greater need than ever for the academic community to provide the American public with an informed perspective on the religious situation in China. The Institute of Buddhist Studies, with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation, invites proposals from scholars across the academic disciplines specializing in any religious traditions, theologians from all religious traditions, and professional journalists, to participate in a three-year research and journalism initiative and series of meetings addressing the impacts of technologies on human relationships.

This initiative seeks to support scholars of religion, theologians, and journalists to powerfully address a central concern of contemporary life: The ways in which technologies reshape human relationships and alter how people are or are not “present” to each other.
