Communicating Religion

As scholars of religion, we are all tasked with communicating religion in one way or another – to students, to the public, and to our research community. Moreover, what we study is itself a message: participants in our studies and creators of the documents we analyse are communicating religion, and what we receive as data is what Giddens referred to as the ‘double hermeneutic,’ or ideas and experiences that have already been mediated. What is the religion communicated to us? How do we communicate religion, and what is it that we communicate when we’re doing it?

East Asia has varieties of religious institutions and communities, folk religions and new religions, and atheism and other secularisms. Christianity and the Rule of Law in Chinese Societies

The Center on Religion and Chinese Society at Purdue University invites papers that examine the relationship between Christianity and the rule of law in a Chinese society. We welcome both scholarly research papers of empirical, historical, or case studies, and personal reflection papers by Christian practitioners of the law (lawyers, judges, legislators, law enforcement agents, etc.).  A personal reflection paper by a law practitioner should reflect on one’s own conversion, Christian beliefs, and the impacts of faith on the practice of the law. The Society for the Scientific Study of Religion is currently accepting individual paper, topical session, and author-meets-critics proposals for our 2018 annual meeting, which will take place October 26-28 at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The theme of the meeting is “Religion and Power: The Creation, Reproduction and Deconstruction of Social Orders.”  The deadline to submit abstracts is March 31, 2018, and decision notifications will be made by April 30, 2018.

A Religious Study Tour of China will be run this summer by the US-China Catholic Association (USCCA). The USCCA has run study tours of China for the past thirty years, mainly for building relations between the Church community in the United States and China.

Especially in light of a potential breakthrough in relations between the Vatican and Beijing, there might be greater need than ever for the academic community to provide the American public with an informed perspective on the religious situation in China.
