Gerardo Martí

Gerardo Martí is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Sociology at Davidson College with expertise in race and ethnicity, immigration, religion, political power, and social change. A prolific and award-winning author, he has served as president of both the Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR) and the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (SSSR). His current research is funded by a $1 million grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. and focuses on churches actively confronting racial injustice. His ninth book is under contract with Oxford University Press.

The Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance’s Senior Scholar Award is given annually to the senior scholar who has made outstanding contributions to the public understanding of religious pluralism and tolerance, and who most exemplifies Boniuk Institute’s mission to understand the conditions which lead to religious pluralism, conflict, and violence, and help people apply its findings in their lives and communities.

Attention young(er) scholars of American religion: the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture are inviting applications for the next cohort of Young Scholars of American Religion. Applications due June 20th!

Beginning in the fall of 2023, a series of seminars devoted to the enhancement of teaching and research will be offered in Indianapolis. The aims of all sessions of the program are to develop ideas and methods of teaching in a supportive workshop environment, stimulate scholarly research and writing, and create a community of scholars that will continue into the future.

Gary Bouma was Australia’s pre-eminent sociologist of religion and a major contributor to sociology worldwide. A professor at Monash University, he held the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural and Interreligious Relations – Asia Pacific from 2005–21 and directed or participated in scores of national and international research projects on such topics as religious pluralism, religious tolerance, and religions’ role supporting multi-cultural societies. He authored or edited over 30 books and 360 articles, including the path-breaking Australian Soul (2006).
