2018-09-04T18:56:16-04:00

Candler School of Theology invites applications and nominations for the founding director of a program that will expand theological education beyond the scope of the school’s traditional graduate and professional degrees. The successful candidate will be appointed to a non-tenure track faculty position with a renewable eleven-month contract, will report to Candler’s Dean, and will serve on the Dean’s Council. Both rank and field are open. Preference will be given to complete applications submitted by October 1, 2018.

The landscape of theological education is rapidly shifting, in terms both of the modes of theological education and of the institutions delivering that education. The founding director will lead Candler’s initiatives in partnering with congregations, denominations, NGOs, and other institutions in order to […]

In her foreword to Jack Reimer’s foundational 1974 edited collection, Jewish Reflections on Death, a book that explores Jewish death and mourning through assorted lenses, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross inquires, “I have always wondered why the Jews as a people have not written more on death and dying. Who, better than they, could contribute to our understanding of the need to face the reality of our own finiteness?” Certainly, from the Kabbalah […]

Religious Study Tour of China

2018-03-08T03:08:05-05:00

A Religious Study Tour of China will be run this summer by the US-China Catholic Association (USCCA). The USCCA has run study tours of China for the past thirty years, mainly for building relations between the Church community in the United States and China.

Especially in light of a potential breakthrough in relations between the Vatican and Beijing, there might be greater need than ever for the academic community to provide the American public with an informed perspective on the religious situation in China. We also think this is a great opportunity for young academics to build China into their research horizon. We have developed this study tour with such a need in mind. Noted historian of Christianity in China Jean-Paul […]

Public Theologies of Technology and Presence

2018-03-08T02:47:03-05:00

The Institute of Buddhist Studies, with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation, invites proposals from scholars across the academic disciplines specializing in any religious traditions, theologians from all religious traditions, and professional journalists, to participate in a three-year research and journalism initiative and series of meetings addressing the impacts of technologies on human relationships.

This initiative seeks to support scholars of religion, theologians, and journalists to powerfully address a central concern of contemporary life: The ways in which technologies reshape human relationships and alter how people are or are not “present” to each other.

Sixteen scholars of religion, theologians, and journalists will receive grants of $10,000 each to support research projects and journalistic publications on technologies and interpersonal presence. Grantees will gather yearly […]

Religious identity and education:
A response to contemporary global pressures

A special issue in the Forum for International Research in Education slotted for publication in fall 2018.

One of the challenges and pressures which globalization has engendered for national education systems, schools, and classrooms worldwide is the growth of religious diversity. Thus, in many places, religious diversity has become a new reality of schooling, to which educators do not necessarily know how to properly respond. Moreover, in the context of religious resurgences around the globe, the growth of religious diversity is often associated with the increase in significance of one’s religious identity and its ardent embrace. By contrast, in secularized settings, there is often […]

Statement of Purpose:

The Sociology of Religion Program Unit of the American Academy of Religion serves as a bridge between religious studies and the subdiscipline of sociology of religion. The group operates as a two-way conduit to bring sociological research into the field of religious studies and to make findings in the broader study of religion available to sociologists. Through cross-fertilization transgressing disciplinary boundaries there can be breakthroughs in research in both fields. The group has a wide conception of sociology of religion. It is open to a multiplicity of approaches utilized in the discipline of sociology. We work to cultivate theoretical contributions founded upon empirical […]
